The trek

On arrival in Peru, we spend two nights in the historical city of Cuzco at 3,400m to help us acclimatise. This gives us a great opportunity to explore this charming city and get a real taste of Peruvian mountain life.

On leaving Cuzco, we will transfer to the market town of Ollantaytambo - our last taste of civilisation before hitting the trail.

We will spend the next three days climbing high up into the mountains, through tropical Andean cloud forests and across high desert plateau. We will also pass several ancient archaeological sites before reaching Intipunku (the famous Sun Gates) to experience a magical sunrise. It is from here that we catch our first overwhelming glimpse of the awe-inspiring Lost City of the Incas - Machu Picchu.

There will be plenty of time to explore this magnificent site, perhaps taking a quiet moment to imagine what life must have been like for the Incas in Machu Picchu.

After a night in Aguas Calientes, we will take the train to Ollantaytambo with exceptionally stunning scenery en route. We then return to Cuzco for an afternoon before celebrating our fantastic achievement in the evening.

The next day we start our journey home, feeling truly victorious about our achievement!
