Brendan Neiland
Calypso
Silkscreen Print
Image Size: 443 X 580 mm
Paper Size: 585 X 750 mm
Brendan Neiland wanted to create an artwork
that was as ‘bright, bold and as
joyful as possible’ and has certainly achieved
this with Calypso, the title itself reminding us what the
Mending Broken Hearts
Appeal is trying to achieve.
The heart is encased by neon light strips and
sits like an olive in a martini glass; tipping a witty,
light-hearted wink at the adage that a glass of
red wine a day is good for the heart.
The composition also reminds us of a heart safely protected by
its ribcage, glowing with health.

About the artist
Brendan Neiland was born in Staffordshire in 1941. He
is best known for his paintings of reflections in modern city
buildings. The cityscape is an environment
that Neiland feels is rich in potential and yet often
neglected. Technique is fundamental to his work, ensuring a fusion
of method and imagery.
His subject research leads to a series of
drawings that formulate and define the composition. These drawings
then become the templates or masks through which the paintings are
sprayed. By using a spray gun to apply paint to canvas rather than
a brush, Brendan can build layers of glazing to create a surface so
perfect that it appears untouched by the hand of man, this effect
in itself reflecting the mechanised nature of the city.
Neiland previously held the post of Keeper
(Director) of the Royal Academy Schools, and he enjoys
continued success as a painter and printmaker. His work is widely
exhibited and is featured in the collections of the Tate Gallery
and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
